Frequently Asked Questions

Multiply the original price by the discount percentage (as a decimal). For a 25% discount on $80: $80 × 0.25 = $20 discount. Subtract from original: $80 - $20 = $60 sale price. Or multiply by (1 - discount): $80 × 0.75 = $60.

Yes, but discounts are applied sequentially, not additively. A 20% + 10% discount doesn't equal 30% off. First, 20% off reduces the price to 80%, then 10% off that reduces it to 72% of the original — a total effective discount of 28%, not 30%.

Divide the sale price by (1 - discount as decimal). If something costs $60 after 25% off: Original = $60 / (1 - 0.25) = $60 / 0.75 = $80. This is useful for verifying that a "discount" is actually a good deal.
