Frequently Asked Questions
A "good" ROI depends on the investment type and risk level. The stock market historically returns 7-10% annually. Real estate typically yields 8-12%. High-risk ventures may target 20%+. Always compare your ROI to the opportunity cost — could you earn more elsewhere with similar risk?
Simple ROI shows total return over the entire period. Annualized ROI (CAGR) shows the average annual return rate, which is better for comparing investments of different durations. A 50% ROI over 5 years (8.4% annualized) is less impressive than 50% over 1 year (50% annualized).
ROI doesn't account for time value of money (use NPV instead), risk, or opportunity cost. It also doesn't consider the timing of cash flows. For a more complete picture, combine ROI with other metrics like IRR (Internal Rate of Return) and payback period.
